The University of the Philippines – Open University (UPOU) Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna is the newest academic institution to join the only Research and Education Network (REN) in the Philippines.

On 19 October 2012, the Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) Operations Team finished the connection of the UPOU Headquarters to the PREGINET. Network and Wi-Fi installation, configuration, and testing of said campus began first week of October 2012.

Through the PREGINET connectivity, students and instructors can collaborate not only with local researchers, but also with other researchers around the world, which will help improve the quality and quantity of research in the campus. Further, the connection will enable the students acquire fresh knowledge and ideas by participating in online seminars and trainings, which are organized and administered by the PREGINET’s local and international partners.

“Our activities in the UPOU Los Baños do not just end here. We are planning to conduct testings of high definition videoconferencing, as well as basic systems administration trainings for the UPOU staff who will handle the network connectiviy,” said PREGINET Technical Head Bayani Benjamin R. Lara.

Lara said that they will also provide technical assistance in upgrading the UPOU Headquarters’ network infrastructure.

Subject undertaking is part of the “Connectivity for UP Campuses Project,” a component of the e-UP Program, which seeks to connect all the UP Campuses across the country to encourage collaborative activities that involve new technologies and applications with interconnectivity to international RENs.
